Easy Fix for a Table Cloth that is too long!

Posted by Tracy Wellmann ~ July 2, 2015

I have a dining table that sits up to 8 people (with 2 separate leafs we can take out) — for many years I had it set up for a seating of 6 but since there is only the 4 of us I recently took out the other leaf and made it a a 4 seater….and a little smaller giving me more room in my Dining Area.  Since I had it set for 6 for so many years I have acquired quite a collection of table clothes that fit the larger size table.  This year when I pulled out my red/creme table cloth to decorate for 4th of July I was bummed to discover the ends are too long overlapping too much on the ends.  drats!!  So, I thought…hmmm….what to do???

My tablecloth is too long on the edges so let’s fix that!

Then…. I remembered a technique I saw somewhere (not sure where) to tie something on each corner “drawing up the over lap” to a more eye appealing table scape.  Ribbon, twine, rubber bands, tulle, (I guess tape would do too) — use your imagination.  I even thought about the hair scrunchies — you can get them in all sorts of colors and styles.  Oh and bandana’s would look good too.  Oh goodness my mind is working as I type.  🙂
Keeping with my country theme I pulled out some raffia and went to work.  I prefer to use the natural raffia (it does comes in several colors) and find its pretty easy to work with.  It’s a straw sort of fiber and the one I like to use the most I purchase from Hobby Lobby (you can see the package below) it’s around 3.99 and don’t let the package fool you — there is ALOT in there.  You can also catch it on sale for 50% off so that’s better yet!

Taa…daaa….just gather corner and tie trim off the excess edges.
package of raffia — I prefer to purchase the one at Hobby Lobby — there is a LOT in there and it’s easy to work with.

Here you can see a whole end of the table — I LOVE it and so does Spencer.  He came in and said “whoa mommy that looks goooooood! — got love it!
Linking up at some of these fabulous parties…..

    Hi Tracy,

Great idea… sadly the last time I had a table cloth on my table was probably Christmas!! I have one of those corner booth type tables (with storage under the benches). It’s kinda county style all on it’s own! Have any ideas to use on a trestle table???

    Thanks for the inspiration,
    hugs, Cheryl
